With your figure isolated from the background, try adding a simple choker with a negative value to push their outline away from them.  I’m not in front of my PC right now, so can’t get you all the settings.  Then use turbulent displace and possibly roughen edges to create the flames, keyframing the evolution and offset.  And finally use fill to make it all black.
