As Mylenium said, we'd need more details in order to troubleshoot the issue properly.

• What are your system specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM, OS version)?
• What are the details of the footage you are working with (format/codec)?
• What's the exact version of After Effects you're using?

Try this:

Disable Hardware Accelerated Composition, Layer, and Footage Panels in After Effects Preferences > Display.

Hard to say since you haven't provided any real info. From inadequate hardware acceleration to damaged source footage to corrupted caches to specific issues with some effects and functions this could be anything. Either way, at the very least flush the disk caches, check your hardware acceleration settings and possibly update your system's graphics driver. Anything more will require specific information.
