Question

How do I import vector smart objects into AE?

I'm working on a project for a client and have been given a PSD file with multiple artboards, some of which contain vector smart objects.  I have only ever worked with layers in AI so I am not sure how to work with PSD smart objects.  Is there a way to import these to AE and edit the layers in that object or do I need to open the smart object and put those indivudual layers in the artboard?  I hope this makes sense, it would be great to get advice ASAP as I'm short on time! Thanks.

I have to say, it is truly mind-blowing that Adobe hasn't been able to get smart objects to import from PSD to AE. It's not like we're talking about two different company's products here...

As Mylenium said, Smart Objects aren't supported by AE.

Vector smart object in a PS file can be opened in Illustrator (double–click to open) and then saved as an separate AI file and them imported into AE.

AE cannot do anything with SOs. It only uses the rasterized preview data of such a layer. Indeed you will have to reorganize the files or request editable files from the client or his agency.
