How to: Face In/Out Transition Effect Like in the 1883 Title Sequence

The subtle and random fade-in/out transitions in the 1883 title sequence are incredibly appealing, especially at the beginning. Here is the link to the video: https://vimeo.com/664104163

To achieve a similar effect, I've been experimenting with a gradient wipe and various gradient layers (though I haven't found a suitable one yet).

How would you recommend approaching the creation of a transition effect like this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would start with Linear Wipe. There is an option to change the angle and feather the edge of the wipe.

Hi Rick, thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.

It seems, though, that the 'linear wipe' effect has less control and yields results opposite to what I would like to achieve. What I'm trying to achieve is a random fade-in effect, where different parts of the image unevenly show up.

I'll experiment further with the 'gradient wipe' effect using different layers and effects unless someone suggests an alternative.

Try something like this:

In this example, the angle was set to -9º, Feather to 228, and Transition completion was animated from 77% to 54%, then from 54% to 81%.

You could also animate a feathered mask or use an animated Fractan Noise layer as a track matte to have the letters fade in and out in a random pattern.
