im trying to get the purple can strech idea- how can you do this?

The purple can (far left) must be on a separate layer, the layer above it must contain only the cans to the right of it. Distortion effects or simply scaling won't work if all of the cans are on the same layer.

Try distortion effects like Bulge or Bezier Warp.
