Hud Effect Masked by object

Could anyone give me a very basic explanation of how the HUD in the above image would have masked so that it sweeps around the back of the object. Just a few clues would be enough and then i can google it.  I think the animatiuon was created in 3ds max and the the huds added afterwords. Full video is below:

These days it is particularly easy as 3D objects in After Effects will intersect 2D layers in 3D space.  So you literally just place your HUD precomp and 3D pipe.

Looking quickly at the video you shared, I'd place a bet that the pipe-thing was rendered using Video Copilot's Element 3D.  Mainly because the lens flares in the video look like VC Optical Flares.  In which case, Andrew Kramer introduced a feature called World Position Matte - which allows you to create a 3D luma matte plane.

Hi @jamesaberdeen73,

Thanks for the question and welcome to the forum. I'm Kevin from Support, a moderator here. While we await a response from a community member, we can try and troubleshoot. What have you tried so far? I'm assuming the 3D render has an alpha channel to use. It looks as though blending modes might also be involved. Let us know what you come up with. I hope we can help you soon.

Thanks,
Kevin
