I can't create a mask using tools

I create a composition, create a form, make a duplicate of it, click on the pen tool creation and for some reason the form is drawn, not the mask

Could you share more details about your workflow? If you're trying to create a mask on a Shape layer, that wouldn't be possible. Feel free to share screenshots or screen recordings.
