As i wrote, quicktime.
Connect iphone to mac, record trough quicktime.

I figured out if I convert the recorded video to h264 via media encoder it works!

As other answers, it is the VFR, which can be solved easily with Handbrake exporting the clip as mp4 checking Constant Frame Rate in the Video tab

go to the footage in the project panel right click->interpret footage->main->more option and change it to smooth video motion. you will lose the audio sync probably but maybe that's less important to you. it's the VFR in which the video was recorded and Ae is not successful in getting the frames from the video.

Converting in Media Encoder didn't work for me, but using Miro Video Converter to convert it to an mp4 did work.

Been driving me mad !,  Seems to be a recent Adobe or Quicktime bug, it didn't happen a few months back.
