Importing AI file to AE

Hi, I am new to AE. I have followed several tutorials on how to prepare AI files for AE and I am saving them correctly, importing them correctly, and I am still getting a blank composition after import. It is driving me crazy because I know I am doing everything right, but obviously I am missing something. Any help would be appreciated!

You got confused by the comps: there is an empty "Comp 1" which is open in viewer, and there is "Gears" which you have imported from AI.

Double click "Gears" to open it in viewer and everything will be there.

Thank you so much! .... I figured it was something dumb I wasn't doing. It seems to be the little things that are throwing me off in AE.
