Question

Is there any way to reload Footage - Photoshop File (Composition - Retain layer sizes)

Hi,

I made the unfortunate mistake of renaming the folders in a project I've been working on for the past few days on my computer. The project contains several AE-projects with Photoshop files with several layers/comps and using 3D-camera. I tried to undo the changes, but it was too late.

Now, when I attempt to reload the footage (and here I just need to pick one random layer of the Photoshop-file like "Background.psd", since AE doesn't have the original "file" when you import retain layer sizes), not all layers respond. Each file is a composition with some pre-compositions and layers, using 3D-camera. The project involves numerous illustrations and different videos/projects.

Is there an easier way to fix this?

I would be very grateful for any help!

The original project file (.AEP) will give you the original folder name and path for the files. Press the Tilda key (~) and look for the file path. When you have found it, go back to Finder or Explorer and fix the names and, if needed, the file paths.

If things are completely fouled up, change the name of the original PSD file by adding a V2 or something similar to the file, import as a composition with cropped layers again, then go back to the original comp and Alt/Option-drag the footage layers from the V2 folder into the original comp to replace the missing footage. That will replace the footage in the original comp and keep all keyframes and effects. As long as you have not changed the size or position of the layers in the Photoshop (or Illustrator) file, everything should work just fine. You can delete the missing footage folder and the V2 comp because they are no longer needed.

This also works if you have added a new layer in the Photoshop File or illustrator file. All you have to do is open the new V2 comp and copy and paste the new layer to the original comp. Then, you can drag the new layer from the V2 folder in the Project Panel, delete the V2 comp and V2 folder, and you'll have cleaned up the original project and added a new layer.
