Is this a alpha matte glitch?

Hi very basic masking issue here. I have text I'm trying to apply a matte on. When I click on Alpha matte the while word disappears even though its not covered by the shape/matte layer. Inverted doesn't work either Please see video: Matte Glitch! - YouTube

What am I doing wrong?

Does your shape layer have a solid fill color? Your screenshot is not wide enough to see if the selected shape layer has a fill. If it does it must be exactly the same color as the light gray background layer on the bottom. No fill = No track mate from the shape layer so this looks like user error and not a bug. Add a fill color to the Shape Layer and make sure the opacity is 100% and your track matte should work.

When you are having problems please reveal the modified properties of the layers that are bugging you by pressing the U key twice so you and we can see what is going on in the comp.

To apply an alpha matte from text onto another layer, place the text ABOVE the layer that you want the matte applied to. Then, on the bottom-most layer, click on the Alpha Matte menu to choose to take a matte from the layer above (the text). This should work?

Thank you much. It's user error my shape had no fill. I thought the shape alone was enough like how masking works.
