Question

Layer object is spinning instead of moving along path.

Hi guys, hope you can help on this one.

I´m trying to make 4 arrowheads to move a long a path.

So far I´ve created two Trace Paths for the first two arrows and they have been

working fine.

The problem began when I started working on the third arrow. For some reason, the

arrowhead is spinning as it moves along the trace path. It is moving along the path

but it is also spinning (about 180 degrees) from keyframe 0 to 100%.

I´m using the following workflow:

1. Create shape layer for the Arrow Path

2. Highlight the path of the Shape Layer then create Trace Path.

3. Select Arrow Path and Add Trim Path

4. Drag the pick whip of the Trim Path up to the Progress of the Trace Path.

5.Create anothe shape layer (Arrowhead)

6. Hold SHIFT and parent (pick whip) the Arrowhead to the Trace Path

Like I said, the problem startrs when I create the Trace Path, because it is not moving along, it´s moving and spinning along the Trim Path.

Thanks a lot for your answer in advance.

Cheers,

Yeah, the coordinates go upside down. shape layer coordinates begin at the center if you rember and it seems that the code doesn't account for that somehow. You may need to delve into the path tracers code. the simple answer may be to re-create everything on a comp-sized solid and create the paths from there. This should work reliably.

OK. Thank you for you help!! I will re create the lower trace paths and see what happens from there. Will let you know if any  other problem occurs. Cheers!

Since you use shape layers there's a chance your coordinates are misaligned because you created the paths with offsets inside a shape group or something like that. similarly, the anchor point for the arrowheads may not be aligned properly. Other than that the usual issues with gimbal lock and auto-orient could be at play and you may need to employ some custom "align to path" expression as you can find them on the Internet. Hard to understand what exactly is going on without screenshots.

Thanks for the reply. I´m sending two screenshots for the sake of clarification.

In the first upper shape layers the arrowhead are working ok. But in the third one, as you can

see, as I move the playhead, shows the trace Path spinning along the path.

It may be important to add that I only created the first shape layer (first path). The others are just CTRL-C CTRL-V of the first.
