Question

Line around landscape

Hi,

I have a landscape and want to draw a line arounf the perimeter of a piece of land.  I drew the line no problem but cannot get it to follow the motion of the video and stay where I originally drew it.

Any ideas?

I can think of at least 10 ways to do what you are doing. What have you tried? We can't point you to the most efficient solution unless we have details about the shot and the workflows you have tried.

I am guessing that you tried Camera Tracking without doing any homework. You could have also used Corner Pin tracking, Motion Tracking, animating by hand, Motion Stabilization, Paint or a half dozen other techniques. Please elaborate. If you just can't get camera tracking to work then go here: Basic AE, look through the tutorials and you'll find one on basic camera tracking.

Hi Rick I kind of have it working.

I added a motion tracker to the original clip and then added a null object as the target for the motion track.  After this I added an adjustment layer and with the mask pen tool drew a box around the piece of land in my landscape.  I added a stroke to this mask and then quickwhip the adjustment layer to the null object.

This is another problem now.  When the footage plays the mask line kind of stays in the shop but seems to move a litte.  What did I do wrong?  I just want the mask line I drew to stay exactly where I put it.

    Thanks

    Chris

Describe the shot. I am envisioning a shot from a drone so the perspective changes. The best option would be to Camera Track and add a shape layer.

Motion tracking is useful for sticking something to feature region that you have tracked. Instead of using a mask and adding a stroke I would use a shape layer path. You'll get better results with less work and have a lot more control. If the path you drew is moving slightly then the most likely problem is that the perspective is changing on the geometry you are trying to outline. To fix that you either have to use Camera Tracking or Corner Pin tracking.

You should probably not be using an adjustment layer to draw a mask and add a stroke. It is not very efficient, a solid will do just as well and if you need to add additional effects to the stroke, they won't foul up the layers below as the adjustment layer would. A shape layer path is easier, vector based, tales less time to render and is far more versatile.

Without seeing your footage or screenshots of the project with and a detailed explanation of your workflow it's pretty difficult to give you some meaningful suggestions. Just select the layers, press UU, PrintScreen and paste to the forum.
