Hello all!

I am quite new to After Effects and still looking up a lot of tutorials to learn, etc.

I am working for a company and looking to find interesting ways to animate logos/monograms and one type of reveal/animation I really like is in this video (first few seconds the reveal of the TF monogram):

The way the letters sort of reveal themselves, starting at different points and going in a quite linear process.

I don't quite know what to call this type of reveal/animation in order to find the correct instrucitons/tutorials online. If anyone has any suggestions as to what I can call it and/or if anyone here has a brief explanation of how something like this could be done that would be helpful.

Also side note: The monogram comes as a PNG file, so I wouldn't be able to apply an effect that would only work on actual text in AE!

Thanks a bunch!

That could be as simple as animated masks. I would probably animate a shape layer and use that as a Track Matte for some footage. You don't need any plugins (effects), you just need a few keyframes. The background videos are cropped, masked, edited so they show up at the right times. I think you would need 7 layers to reproduce that shot.

Watch out for tutorials you find searching the web. Most of the new ones I see are prepared by enthusiasts and a great deal of them present inefficient workflows and a lot of them are very poorly explained. Make sure you vet your trainers. It's always a good idea for someone just starting out with After Effects to explore the Window/Workspace/Learn menu and spend about 10 or 15 minutes learning the basics of the UI. The User Guide, available on the After Effects product page, in the help files, and even on the landing page for this forum. It will provide you with the basics so you don't end up spending a lot of time on the forums asking questions about poorly presented tutorials.
