[macOS] AE preview color doesn't match export (MacBook screen issue & color shift during playback)
(Note: English is not my native language and I am using a translation tool to write this post, so I apologize in advance for any awkward phrasing!)
The Main Issue I’m trying to make my After Effects preview accurately match my rendered output (viewed in VLC/Safari), but I’m running into preview color mismatch issues on macOS.
Project & Color Settings
-
Working Color Space:
sRGB IEC61966-2.1 -
Use Display Color Management: OFF
-
Blend Colors Using 1.0 Gamma: OFF
Two Specific Problems We Are Facing
1. Preview oversaturated on MacBook built-in display (My setup)
-
On my external monitor, the AE preview matches the exported video (VLC/Safari) perfectly.
-
However, when I move AE to the MacBook Pro built-in screen (Display P3 / Liquid Retina XDR), the preview suddenly becomes much darker and overly saturated, breaking the match with the rendered output.
2. Preview color shifts ONLY during playback (Friend's setup)
-
Using the exact same settings on an external monitor, the preview matches the export while paused.
-
As soon as playback starts (RAM Preview / Spacebar), the colors instantly turn darker and saturated. Pausing brings it back to normal.
Troubleshooting Attempted (Both Setups)
-
Restarted AE & Mac
-
Purged Memory & Disk Cache
-
Reset Preferences (
Shift + Option + Cmdon launch)
Questions How can I get a reliable, predictable preview that matches the export across Mac displays? Is this caused by macOS ColorSync handling, or a GPU hardware acceleration bug during playback?
Any insights or workarounds would be greatly appreciated!
