Question

Make frame number match actual sequence frame number

If I render out a png image sequence that does not start at 0 the frame of the sequence will differ than that of the composition. Is there a way to see the frame of the sequence as well?

Sounds like you want to change the Start Frame value of the Composition to match the Start Frame number of the PNG Image Sequence.

Of course, the Comp needs the Time Display to be set to show Frames instead of Timecode.  If not already showing Frames, command-click (macOS) or control-click (Windows) the Time Display in the Timeline panel to set it to Frames before opening the Sequence Settings dialog box.

Yes, that is an option. But more importantly i'd like to see which frame of the selected comp I am viewing. If I have a sequence within a comp I would like to position it exactly at whichever frame it starts on without having to rely on visual lining it up etc.

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you're exporting something, then bringing it back into AE and wanting to be able to view the frame number, presumably while using this in another composition. Close?

You could enable Time Remapping on that layer, which will display timecode/frames for that footage as a propety in the timeline. Does that get you what you're after?
