making a tartan heart

Entirely depends on what you have. Since you have neither provided a screenshot of your texture nor any info on how you actually generate your heart, nobody can tell you much. Of course thge most likely answer to getting all sorts of wrapping effects is using 3D animation, but there may be other methods that would do the trick for you.

I found a tutorial however I'm not sure if this is the right approach. Im trying to make the heart 'tartan' not one colour from the tartan. 

Is it possible to get the heart to choose the tartan as its cover...eg like I wrapped it neatly in tartan paper?

Have the tartan png visibile click on the colored box to choose the color picker window then use the eyedropper to sample the color from the png?
