Question

Manual zoom out: Scale or 3D track?

Hello folks,

I have footage in which a HUD is around the head of the actor an a manual zoom out from a close up.

What I want to achieve is to keep the HUD tracked to the head of the actor and keep it in scale aswell as fade it out while the zoom out happens.

How would one approach this? Use a 3D track or is motion tracking + keyframing the scale of the HUD enough?

If the move is genuinely a camera zoom then the perspective won't change and a regular motion track will do fine - track position and scale if you have suitable tracking points.

If the camera is physically moving then a 3D track may be a better option, depending on how much perspective changes.

Thanks, so it's as I thought. A 3D track then only makes sense if it would be a dolly zoom – which it is not in my case.

If I track the scale aswell do I have to scale my HUD elements with keyrames or does the tracker do that job then?

The tracker should be able to manage the scaling perfectly well, so long as you have suitable tracking points available.
