Marking a Layer

Anybody here know how to put a marker on a precomposition?  I'm trying to mark where an action happens, but all I can do is mark the timeline within the precomp, but what I want is to see it when I'm placing it in the larger composition.  Surely there's a way, but I sure don't know it, and I am not finding it anywhere.

If you want to add a layer marker then move the CTI* to the correct point in the timeline, make sure the layer is selected, then use the Layer>Markers>Add Marker or the keyboard shortcut control + 8 or a Mac or the windows equivalent. The shortcut is called out in the Menu to the far right of the operation.

All of this is in the User Guide (Search Help in the top right corner of AE)

In the Preferences > General you'll see "synchronize time of related items". Make sure that's on.

In your pre-comp put the playhead at the time you require for your marker. Now return to the downstream comp. The playhead will be in the correct location. Add the marker there.

I can get to the correct position in the timeline, but how do I add the marker so that I can move things around without losing it?

There are two types of markers - added through the same command. If you don't have a layer selected and you add a marker you'll get a 'composition marker' - one that sits on the work area bar at the top of the timeline. If you have a layer - or nested comp - selected when adding a marker you'll get a 'layer marker'. This is related to the layer and will stay in the same position relative to the layer as you move the layer in the timeline.
