Masking Behavior

I'm new to AE & watchng tuts on masking. The masking behavior I'm getting is different. I'm using AE2024 on Win10.

When I create a mask (rect or pen tool - same result), everthing disappears except the mask. I'm attaching two jpgs. The first is before masking. The second is after masking. This is probably some basic setting I'm missing.

    I would just like to add, if I add an effect I can click on the "compositing options" plus sign and the mask behavior is the same as I'm seeing on all the tutorials I've been watching. However, I do not want to add an effect.
