Melting layers together

I have a psd file consisting of 6 layers.
Normally I can melt the layers together by clicking ctrl-e, but now nothing happens.
Whats is wrong?

Don't bring the PSD file in as a comp and it will come on flat.

You cannot merge layers in AE. If you really mean Photoshop ask your question there and provide some info about the nature of the document. Blanket statements along the lines of "It doesn't work." are utterly useless.
