Menus don't work

Menus don't appear when clicked. They appear when double-clicked, but they just disappear when I try to click on a menu item, making the app unusable. 

 

I tried trashing the preferences and updating my (Kensington) mouse driver, which is connected via a USB hub and works reliably on all other software.

 

AE 22.1.1, macOS Monterey 12.0.1, Mac Pro (late 2013) 12 core Intel, 64 GB

Adobe support suggested I open a different project from the finder. In the new project, menu behaviour was normal. Next, start a new project and import the problem project into it.

 

No explanation other than it is a "project-specific error."

Why cant they just fix it properly. This bug is stopping me from doing paid work, its our lively hood on the line.
