i checked audio hardware and checked if the audio on my pc is on and it is still not working

edit: it randomly started working again for no apparant reason... the question still remains because i do not want to encounter this issue again

try to cache your preview before play

OP: You may also want to check...

Preferences > Previews > "Mute audio when preview is not realtime"

If this is on, your audio won't play if AE is building a preview (ie 'building the green line') and therefore likely playing less than full frame rate. When the preview is stored to RAM and playing back at full speed the audio will play. That maybe why it seems to be playing sometimes, but not others.

This is a helpful feature - but it can trip you up if you don't understand how the AE previewing system works.

    Hi LuukKoffeman,

    Thanks for reaching out.

It is impossible to identify the exact reason which may have caused the audio issue in the first place. However, I assume that there could be some issue with the audio hardware or the preferences settings inside After Effects. When you refreshed the settings, it made it work again.

I agree with @justintaylor as well. The point that he has raised about the preview settings also is an important option that needs to be selected for getting the correct playback(both audio and video).

I am glad that you got it fixed and hope that it does not happen again. However, if it does, please feel free to give us a shout. We'll be happy to help.

    Thanks,

    Shivangi

Make sure you have the Audio button checked in the preview window

If it is and you pull up levels on your media (select layer > press "L" > expand "Waveform"), then the problem has to be with your audio hardware. Restart the app, restart the computer, try different audio settings, update audio hardware drivers, and all that.
