My composition won't preview

Hey so I am extremely new to adobe after effects (like literally I only installed it yesterday) and I've learned to do simple things but I've run into the same issue twice. Sometimes when I do a simple actio, my composition would stop previewing. I restarted it since I didnt get too far into editing the video, but when I deleted a split part of a layer, my composition wouldn't preview AGAIN. I don't want to restart my edit over and over again. Any tips?

btw I am using a Mac

First, go through the basics here: Basic AE You need to make sure you have a good understanding of how After Effects works. Spend a couple of hours going through the basics and sample projects.

Second, AE is not an Editing app, you use it to create shots that you cannot create in any other way, it is not used to edit movies. Make sure you are using the right tool for the job. Most of my comps are under seven seconds and one shot.

Last point, when you run into problems look for the modified properties of the layers that are giving you trouble by selecting the layer and pressing the U key twice. If you can't see something obvious or fix the problem by changing some of the modified properties then post a screenshot (Shift + Ctrl/Cmnd + 3) of the whole comp showing us the problem by just dragging the screenshot from the desktop to the reply field on this forum. It could not be any easier. Then give us workflow details.
