My premiere pro mask is affecting my AE mask

I linked a clip from premiere pro with AE. When I view the clip in AE it shows the mask I made on the clip from premiere pro. I duplicated the layer in AE and made a mask because I'm trying to mask something out in that clip, but everytime I try to move my mask the mask I have on the clip from premiere pro follows. It's like it's linked in some way. I tried removing the premiere pro mask on one of the layers in AE but then it removes it from the entire clip. 
Is there some way to unlink the masks so the one already existing from premiere isn't affecting the one I'm trying to work with in After effects? I can't seem to solve the problem in any way. PLEASE HELP!
