No voice audio, only background

So I imported an mp4 file hoping to green screen some characters for use irl, after finishing the green screen and running a preview of it, none of the characters speak and all that is heard is the background ambience and music. I rendered them hoping that it would just be a result of previewing and the same thing. I am an extremely novice After Effects user, any detailed suggestions would be appreciated.
