Object not following pen tool path

Hello, 

I am new to learning after effects. I am simply following a basic tutorial where a rocket is to follow a custom path made with the pen tool. I have created the path and copied the keyframe from the layer path into the position property for the rocket. But, the rocket is not following the path and goes all over the place. Why is this the case? Is it a glitch? I do not see what I could possibly be doing wrong by copying and pasting.
