Only background audio importing from MP4

Hi all,

After importing MP4s into After Effects, only the "background audio" will play. Whether it's music, people walking around, whatever, only the background audio will import, no speech. The videos' audio plays perfectly fine in VLC, but no dice when importing. Am I importing the MP4s incorrectly, or should I re-encode my video with a new codec in ffmpeg? The videos I've tried are encoded with H.264/AVC1 video and AAC audio.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Yeah, transcode them.  I like to use quicktime movies in JPEG 2000, PNG, Animation or (if you have it) ProRes 422 codecs.

Sure, the file sizes will be bigger, but hey -- that's life.
