Opacity animation looks choppy

So I animated a layer from 0% opacity to 100% so that it slowly fades in but the thing is that it doesn't looks smooth instead it looks like it hops to the next percentage each frame or something. Even when rendered.

Did anyone experienced the same and is there a fix?

Would help a lot, thanks.

4 years later and I've run into the same issue. I have a 0% opacity keyframe going 20 frames into a 100% opacity keyframe, and for some reason, the layer doesn't start appearing until maybe 60% of the transition. It's a jump from white nothingness to midgrey. Will post a solution if I figure one out,
