Paint on transparent erase issues

Hi everyone,

trying to race through the steep learning curve that is Ae so I apologise in advance if my inexperience is the issue here.

I have been trying to create a scribble effect on a short video. I've used the original video as I needed to match my 'scribbles' with the live footage. I've used the paint tool with a blend of constant, write on and single frame elements and I've also used the erase tool. The only way I seemed to be able to do this was to paint directly onto a layer containing the original footage.

After I had completed my scribbles I turned on the 'paint on transparent option'. I noticed at this point that anywhere I had erased was now showing the live footage even though I had been using the erase tool as 'paint only'.

I now want to add an adjustment layer with a turbulent displace loop to create a wobble effect to my scribbles and having precomposed these two layers I was going to add another copy of the live footage to complete it.

What I find is the wobble effect is happening to the live footage as well as the paint lines in patches where I have used the erase tool.

Is there any way I can get round this?

All help/comments will be appreciated.

Jose, thanks so much for this. It would have worked really well if I hadn't been redrawing over the same area, but because I'm using the scribbles to illustrate a poem I'm doing lots of drawing over the same area, erasing it and then drawing on top of it. Anything painted on an erase area doesn't show up.

I'm thinking I need to start again - which is going to be very time consuming - but even if I did I'm still not sure what I should be doing to achieve my effect.

This is the normal behavior when you check the Paint on Transparent option and you have some "erasers" added to your layer. Try to do this:

1.- Duplicate the layer.

2.- In the original layer, delete all the eraser strokes you added.

3.- In the duplicate one, delete the brush strokes and maintain the eraser strokes

4.- In the Track Mattes column, select Alpha Inverted Matte over the original layer.

Check the attached image.
