Parenting shortcut key

Hey! 

I have dozens (hundreds sometimes) of layers that make pick whipping really frustrating, selecting from the list even so. It would be much easier to simply select a layer in the viewer press a key (combination) and select the parent.  Is there a way to parent layers with a shortcut instead of the parent whip pick?
