Particular 'Migrate Settings' Freezes After Effects

Hi Ya'll,

A client gave me an AE file with at least 12 layers with Particular effects on them.  When I click the 'Migrate Settings' button in the Effects Controls panel for one layer, After Effects freezes, or beachballs for hours.  Not sure what I can do to fix this.  Anyone have this issue?

     Thanks!

Is your Particular up-to-date and, perhaps more importantly, a version that works with the version of After Effects that you're running?

If you do not migrate settings, the effects should still render as expected - you just cannot make any edits.

If you cannot confirm which version of Particular that works best with your version of After Effects, you should be able to duplicate the layer, delete the legacy version of Particular, apply the current version and then continue to work - assuming the current version doesn't cause a crash.

With the Red Giant plugins, I found if I didn't update Red Giant when I switched from After Effects 2021 to 2022 that using the plugins would crash like crazy.

Without any info about the specifics like what version the file was created with and what features it uses nobody can even guess. You need to provide much more Info. That said, one thing that might work is to splice out the layers to individual comps, convert hhrm and then copy & paste them back together.
