Pen tool not working correctly in After effects

Please someone help me figure this out quickly, i want to go to sleep.

i was tracing something with the pen toll in after effects and when i want to the curves it goes like thar, like in the different direction? i don't know what to do...

I'd recommend going through the article that Mylenium suggested.

To get around the situation, hold down the Alt key and drag the handle. Please refer to the screenshot.
