Perspective tracking just wont stop!

I'm trying to track a circular mask around someone's face (the face gets too blurry for usual facial tracking). Due to the blurriness the mask slips off the face, which is to be expected, but when I try to stop the tracking to readjust the mask, After Effects won't respond to any of my inputs and continues tracking with a botched mask. This is very frustrating. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and what I might be able to do to stop it?

Are you sure you are stopping the track? I've seen a lot of folks struggle with that. Even if the tracking gets fouled up you should be able o stop it, then pick it up again down the timeline. When you apply the mask just delete the keyframes where the tracking fails and set as few keyframes as you can to fix the matte.

I click on the 'analyse forward' button, which is supposedly meant to act as a stop button when it is already analysing, but it won't work, in fact, nothing if AE works at all, I can't open any of the top menus or interact with anything else, it's like the whole program has frozen, but continues to analyse.
