That sounds frustrating.

What file path do you see for your project file in the title bar for After Effects while the project is open?  Regardless of how a project is opened, if that file path is not maintained via File > Save then something outside of After Effects is causing the issue.

After Effects also shows an asterisk after the .aep to indicate that the project file has changes that need to be saved.

@Todd_Morgan:

  • Is the file path that is displayed in the title bar the file path of the project you intended to open using File > Open Recent or using the Recent list on the Home panel?
  • As you edit, does an asterisk appear at the end of the file path?.  For example, does ".../project name.aep" appear as ".../project name.aep *" until you choose File > Save?

It shows the folder of the last project I was working in, not the folder where from Open Recent got the file, and Save As confirms that wrong folder. So if I updated the file (per the asterix) and just ctrl-S that updated file goes into the wrong folder.

It sounds like you are misunderstanding how Open Recent works.

Try using File > Increment and Save instead.

As far as saving to a recent location goes, that depends on the options available in the Save Dialog box that the operating system that we're using presents.  For example, macOS presents "Recent Places" if in the Where pop-up menu.

Something I do to manage multiple project locations is to keep the file path easily available.  On Windows, I copy the file path in Explorer to paste it in the Save dialog box.  On macOS, I drag and drop the location from the Finder to the Save dialog box (but Go to Folder works as well).

If you import any file or even drag assets into the Project Panel, After Effects wants to save the project in the last folder you used. I guess I am just used to that behavior. This happens with Save and Save As.

I work on several different client deliverables every day, so this is a PITA and not condusive to a good workflow.

Hey Todd,

I'm sorry to hear about this. Please let us know which After Effects version you're currently using (Help > About After Effects). We recommend testing in the most recent version of After Effects (23.6). If possible, please share a screen recording explaining the issue if you're experiencing this with After Effects 23.6.

Thanks,

Ishan

I use File/Open Recent all the time. What's broken? I get a chronological list of the last ten projects that I have saved. Because I work on about 4 of 5 different projects in two or three different client directories every day that I use After Effects, the File/Option Recent menu saves me a bunch of time browsing between folders.

When I use Open Recent and then ctlr-S it saves that project in the last folder I had worked in, not the folder that the file lives in. PITA!!!!!!

I have never had that problem or seen it posted as a bug. You should report it and include your complete system and AE specs.
