PNGs in After Effects 23

Ever since the update, AE 23 cannot import or read PNG files. Is this a new "feature"??? I get an error when importing PNGs.

I'm on Mac OS 12.6

Correct answer ryanhoog

So this is solved. For some reason, the AE ".plugin" files in the Format folder weren't there. Not sure why they weren't. So I uninstalled and reinstalled AE, and they were restored. Now I have full PNG support again.

Thanks!

I'm having the exact same issue right now - can't get any pngs to import.
I really don't want to uninstall and reinstall AE but it's looking like I might have to.

Thanks for reporting this @kayl0rza, sorry to see you're in this same situation. If you look in the Plug-ins > Format folder next to After Effects.app, what do you see in there? Since this is the second report, it sounds like the installation might not be completing correctly, but we'd need to investigate that further.

Thanks again for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,

I took a look at this folder and it's the same situation as the original poster- nothing is in that folder. I uninstalled, reinstalled, and now the format folder is full and I'm able to import pngs. When I originally installed 2023, I had to manually transfer a lot of plugins from 2022. I wonder if in doing that I accidentally erased the original contents?

That's great to hear @ryanhoog! Thank you for the follow-up. We're still looking into what possibilities would have gotten your installation into that state, but happy to hear you have PNG support restored.

Hi,

It's every single PNG. Doesn't matter where it's made.

Hi @ryanhoog,

Thanks for reporting this issue. No, this is not an intended change; PNGs import should be fully supported in After Effects 2023.

Are you able to share a PNG file that you aren't able to import into After Effects 2023? That would be the best way for us to investigate and diagnose what is going wrong so that it can be fixed.

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,

Anything specific about those PNGs? How and in which program were they created? Color profiles? Do other file types work without issue?
