Preview doesn't work - After Effects 2019

Sometimes the preview will work briefly, then it stops. Then I cannot even see where the stage is. And then it crashes. I cannot work like this. I had not updated since using my purchased copy of CS5.5. I would like to work there again but cannot save backwards. I may end up starting from scratch in CS5.5 anyway because this is unusable. Very disappointed in Adobe.

oooooo man!! i really dont envy you!!! basically the screwed up so many things in the new after effects.

-ram preview doesnt work any more, for example if i have my comp at 100% zoom it will never play real time, so basically i will never be   able to see what i am working on with absolute precision.

-now layer controls and rendered composition are not synked, so if you want to scrub in your timeline and you have a lot of null objects is   going to be an incomprehensible laggy mess.

-all user interactions (moving shape layer, edit text, scubbing timeline, ecc) get insanely slow very fast, really hard to work with. so forget   about complex project!

Is there a CC version of After Effects you recommend or should I reinstall CS5.5?

No offense, but your post is useless. You have not provided even a minimum of information regarding what operating system you use, your actual preview settings, comp settings and so on. Other than that the usual platitudes apply: Start by updating your graphics drivers and check your hardware acceleration settings. Anything beyond that really requires some info to work with.

It is currently running a bit better after clearing the disk cache and eliminating unused compositions/elements to reduce file size (I had brought over a whole other project so I could use parts of it). It will eventually show me a preview if I let it sit for a few minutes. It does appear the primary issue is it's a large, complicated file. Which is frustrating because my work requires large, complicated files.

I'm running Mac OS Mojave v 10.14.2. It is currently set to use "Mercury Software Only". Maximum disk cache size is 5 GB right now. The preview preferences are: Adaptive Resolution Limit "1/8", Zoom Quality "More Accurate", Color Management Quality "More Accurate Except Cached Preview". Composition Switches "Automatically Enable Frame Blending and Motion Blur Rendering" and Audio "Mute Audio When Preview Is Not Real-time" are both checked.

My assumption was because this issue arose without me changing any default settings this may have been a common problem and if I withheld some specifics initially I could yield broader responses.

Your disk cache is too low - this is probably the lowest I've ever heard anyone set, to their cache size. Make it BIGGER! And set the cache to a fast drive.

AE also gets bogged down when the cache gets filled. When the cache is filled, AE has to delete existing files in the cache as well as write new cached data to the cache - this is very bad for performance.

So - (1) Bigger Cache and set it to a fast drive and (2) purge your cache often or when you notice AE performing sluggishly.
