Hi everyone,

Every time I open the app, it runs fine, I get 2 mins of proper functioning, then, preview freezes, but the app keeps running contrary to the preview. But when I want to close it, the app stops running again.

I alredy do :

1. Resetting the preferences

2. Disable Hardware Accelerated Composition, Layer, and Footage Panels in After Effects Preferences > Display.

3. Not working

My Specs:

Apple M2 Max

MacOS Ventura V13.4.1

Ram 32 GB

After effects V.23.5

After effects beta V.24

Thanks,

Alex

Are you still having the issue? Let us know.

I am moving this thread from Bugs to Discussions for now.

Thanks,

Nishu

Note that I'm simply putting together simple things involving git visualizations, so I'm not that familiar with after effects or etc. But it turns out the thing that was causing everything to be slow, for whatever reason, was that I had my working area set to the whole 10 minute composition. When I changed it to just be a few seconds around where I was actively working, things worked fine, playing from ram and even playing fresh smoothly, even at full resolution, when I was working at 25% before!

I think this sounds like a bug with After Effects since I can't imagine why the size of the work area would cause playing frames from ram to be slow.

I actually have a similar issue. Sometimes it works fine, but then starts working slowly.

After effects is only using 6gb of ram.

I have a relatively large project but only working on a composition with a few layers in it. That is the only composition that is open.

Oddly, the simple scene i'm looking at, which is only a single mp4 source with no effects and only scaling applied, will preview smooth when fresh. But playing from cached frames in RAM (as displayed by the info panel, and by the green marks in the timeline), causes it to stutter and play at around 9fps versus the target 30fps.

Which is pretty crazy considering these frames are cached in RAM? I find myself toggling things like motion control or whatever just to clear the cached previews and play it fresh which seems to be the only way it plays smoothly.

I'll note that I am using the latest beta, which is unfortunate because it required me to upgrade my project files, which is now no longer compatible with the release version of after effects.

Hi Alex,

Sorry for your issue.

Does it happen in all the projects? Are there any third-party plug-ins installed? While the issue is happening, do you mind looking at the Activity Monitor and seeing how much RAM After Effects is using? Please share a screenshot.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Nishu
