Sounds like you're just selecting the effect and trying to saving it.

You need to select all the properties you want to save

Read up on saving animation presets. If you want all effects and their keyframes you select just Effects in the timeline, then save the presets. This will keep any renamed sliders, all expressions, all modified properties, and all keyframes. If you want to save all transformation properties then select just Transform and you'll get them all even if there are no keyframes. If you only want to save position keyframes the select just Position and the animation preset will ignore any changes in scale, rotation, and transparency.

If you open up an effect or an effect control that you have Renamed and animated then the Animation Preset will save only the keyframes, current value, or expression. Any name changes in the ECW or the timeline will not be saved if you select a specific property. For example, if you have renamed a control, which is often the case with Expression Controls or renamed a mask and you drill down to the keyframes or the expression the name change will not be saved and things could break.

The basic rule for saving an animation preset is "Select the highest level of the properties you want to save, not the keyframes or expressions, and everything below those properties will be saved."

This is all in the documentation. The fastest place to find many answers to common questions on this forum is to use the Search Help field in the top right corner of AE. Do not confuse Search Help with the Help Menu

Thanks for this. I've saved loads of User Presets over the years, but I guess I haven't done any for a while and forgot these important details of the process. Was about to write a bug report!
