have been using masks for walk-by transitions and today I went to go create my mask, invert it and select transparency mode and the selected area of my mask shape will not get selected or go transparent. Any fixes?

I have no idea what mode your mask is set to. Solo the layer with the mask, enable the transparency grid, press 'mm' to reveal all mask properties, and post another screenshot. From what I see, everything is normal.

If you add a mask to a layer, you add transparency, so only a portion of the layer is visible. If you reduce mask transparency the remaining visible portion of the layer becomes more transparent. It sounds like you want to poke a hole in a layer, then fill that hole up. The way you fill the hole back up is to duplicate the mask, set one copy of the mask to add and the other to subtract, then animate the opacity of one of the copies.

There will be a slight edge aliasing problem when you do that, but you can fix the problem using mask expansion. You will need to expand the Add mask by about 2 pixels to fix the semi-transparent edge.

A picture's worth a thousand words, so show us a screenshot of the comp viewer and timeline with the relevant properties revealed and provide other details that could be appropriate such as system info, hardware acceleration settings, footage types etc..
