Question

Project based on another Project

I am really new, and learning After Effects. I primarily am using it to create animations and masks for Projection Mapping on my house. One of the things that would be really handy is when I make an update to the mask for different compontents on my house if all the projects that were using it received that update. Is there a way to have my projects/compositions built off another one so that when I update the base one all the others get that update?

Thanks,

Dan

No. Projects aren't assets/ footage items and the order for masks is just the opposite - they are sub-entities of layers. The only way to work around this would be to use track mattes instead of masks, so everything auto-updates once the image sequence/ clip constituting the matte gets overwritten. Otherwise you have to settle on importing the project into the other project and copy & pasting the updated masks onto the other layers. In order to facilitate this process it may be smart to create a dedicated "I do my mask stuff only here" project to prevent clutter and redundant stuff being imported every time which you need to delete. anyway, the specifics will of course depend on what exactly you do, but chances are that you'll always have to put up with some clunky workflows every now and then. There's simply no good way to streamline such a scenario perfectly.
