Proper Effect

Question

This is a magician scene. You can see in this video fire comes from bottom to top[stage]. At the top it is okay the fire to take the shape of the stage. But bellow the stage, it should take an uneven shape not an ellipse sharpe. How to do this?

I assume it can be done by effect. Is the any effect to do this?

You would have to apply some masking and create the illusion of a "cylinder" within the stage. Applying some darkening at the edges in particular would help a lot, which could easily be done with a duplicate of your mask onto which a second mask is applied in the middle and then you color everything black and blur it a bit to create a soft shadow. Of course you can wear yourself out creating more details by ammending the underlying graphics with a real cylinder, masking the fire, adding glows and so on.
