With a MacBook Pro M5 Max, you already have a very powerful machine, so After Effects should run really well. You only need to keep a few things in mind.

• Use internal storage to store projects and media files because internal storage has lower latency.

• Lower the preview resolution while working with heavy projects.

• Go to Edit > Purge > All Memory & Disk cache (this will remove temporary files and free up space in RAM) whenever you feel After Effects is not performing as it should.

I think the easiest way is to go to Creative Cloud.com. Sign into your Creative Cloud Account, Download the Creative Cloud App, and then download After Effects from the app. This will also alert you when updates are available.
