Question about convert to editable text

So sometimes when i hit convert to editable text on a PSD layer, it makes a copy and mutes the original, sometimes it just straight up converts it and i lose the original layer (of course it's still in the project folder). What is the rule for when this happens? I want to say it has something to do with whether the layers are nulled or not based on my observations, but i just wanted to know so i could be consistent with it in the future.

Thanks !

Happens when you have applied custom formatting. If you use custom kerning/ pairing in your PSD and similar, AE will retain the original raster layer since conversion may change appearance. When you just typed out a text directly with the font's defaults, a direct conversion is possible.

Beautiful, and I know exactly why now we had glyph options that we changed.
