Real time marker placement during playback no longer working

I've always been able to play audio preview (keypad ".") and place markers using the * key in real time, but suddenly after recent updates the markers aren't placed correctly when doing this.

It doesn't seem to be an issue of lag, because all of the markers are placed without stuttering (and this is during audio-only preview) but they seem to be placed as though I was watching the playback at 0.5x or 0.75x.

The problem persists regardless of the comp frame rate or type of audio file. I'm pretty sure it's an issue with the software, but I'm posting here to if anybody else using after efrects the same way (timing animation/text to audio) has the same issue since updating or whether it could be some hardware issue on my end.
