Question

Render Freezes/Crashes please help

I’m on an imac retina 2017 quad core intel 64 gigs memory running Ventura

I’m using AE 23.1.0

I found some handy advice on Youtube that helps a little but not always:

only use mercury software, not GPU & don’t render multiple frames.

I see that AE uses 88% of the 64 gigs of memory. So I don’t try to run anything else while rendering.

It still freezes and crashes. Is the problem with memory allocation? If I had more memory would it NOT crash? Would a newer mac make any difference?

Hi @straightlife

Thank you for your detailed post.

  • How much memory is allocated to After Effects? You can check that in Preferences > Memory & Performance.
  • Have you installed any third-party plugins?
  • Do you get a crash report after the crash? If yes, can you share a crash report so that we can investigate it?

Best,

Rameez

It takes 88% of 64 gigs of memory. That's what's allocated. I never ever get a crash report. It just freezes. I purge the cache, don't use GPU or multi frame rendering. Don't run ANYTHING else. All those things really help. Of all the apps I use AE loads incredibly slowly AND takes a long time to quit. I love AE but these things are frustrating.
