RepeTile trail effect

Hi there, lately I am challenging myself to step up my After Effects game. I wanted to see if I could figure out how to recreate this effect from an M.I.A. video at the 8:37 mark. https://youtu.be/FKqGH6i8RDo?si=yySd2KA_aNb8wArw&t=515 

I have been playing around with RepeTile to see what I can accomplish. I really like the ghost trail that seems to be present in the video, but it's difficult to figure out myself how to do this. It also immediately gets very messy- is there a way to best manage multiple stacked effects?

Rep-tile can give you the animated squares. Then pre-compose and fiddle with Echo to create the image trails. I have an example somewhere that I will look for. I will share it if I find it in the next little while.
