Replacing a shape with an image

Hello everyone,

For a little project I treid creating an animation. I did this in After Effects however, now that I want to make some changes I'm starting to notice the limits of my abilities. In the animation below:

Animation

The biggest problem I currently have is that I want to replace the pawns (which are shapes created within after effects), with a different graphic. For this graphic however, I want to use an image. I can't seem to find a way to do this, or even just completely replace the shape with an image and give this image the same motions. With an image however, it is not possible to -for example- add a repeater or something.

Also, int the second part of the animation (where the pawns go into a circle), is it possible for the pawns to change position in the way they already do, but for them to keep the same orientation?

Thank you guys so much! I'm learning a lot here, however the more I learn, the more I find how much I have left to learn!

It's not possible to replace dynmaically generated items with externally linked assets. All you can hope for is to copy&paste the keyframes, assuming the animated properties exist on both item types and the coordinates line up.

Would it maybe help if I'd share the .AEP file?

or you could place the new object where you want and simply parent the new object to the old object, and toggle the visibility of the old object. less elegant, but it works.
