Question

reverse sorting logic in the Project panel

With the latest version (23.4) and the new sorting logic, things are becoming messy.

While it is nice to have elements like 1 and 1.1 placed close to each other, many other aspects have changed.

Now, compositions that begin with symbols like - or _ are placed below elements that start with numbers. Previously, it was the opposite.

Additionally, if you have two compositions with the same name, but one starts with a single _ and the other starts with double __, the one with the double underscore will be positioned below the single underscore.

This behavior is opposite even to what is used to in Windows Explorer.

These changes significantly impact the naming workflow. It is beneficial for 1 and 1.1, but problematic for everything else.

Agreed! I use outline-style naming for comps (1 for main timeline, 1.1 and 1.2 are precomps in the main timeline, 1.1.1 is a precomp within 1.1, etc). If those numbers stand alone they get sorted as expected, but as soon as I append a more descriptive name (e.g. 1_Main), the ordering reverses. This doesn't seem to follow a logic I can understand, or reflect the behavior of finder or other OS.

Has anyone come accross a feature request ("idea" post?) to enable the old sorting method? I found a bug report on this topic, but an Adobe staff comment indicated that this was an intential update.
