Rotate 3d camera around 3d object

Question

Help please!

Know how to rotate a 3d object with camera, but unsure how to rotate camera around object?

Trying to use camera to do a 360 orbit around stationary 3d car, but failing!

Im obviously missing something as should be straightforward?

Here's my goto approach for creating an orbiting camera.

Create a null layer.
Make it 3D
Position it to be where you want the centre of the orbit to be.
Parent the camera to it
Keyframe the null's rotation

You'll now get the camera orbiting around in a perfect circle. You can still keyframe the camera's position, so you could push in to your model in a spiral pattern, for example.
